When you hit the hay, are you normally in tandem? If so, you have more than just your own personal comfort to think about when choosing your mattress. As each individual has their own sleeping preferences, there are going to be some issues that come up when bedtime territory is shared. Having a snuggle-buddy at bedtime has its upsides and downsides, but for the most part, any negatives can be ameliorated by finding the right mattress.

First of all, you’re going to want to make sure you have a big enough mattress for the both of you. The twin from your college dorm isn’t going to cut it anymore, nor probably even a full, depending on your girth and nocturnal activity. Bigger and/or squirmier sleepers need a bit more elbow room, so if in doubt, size up on your mattress. Nobody ever complained about having too much room to stretch their limbs in repose.

Now, if you’ve ever slept on a waterbed, this is almost inarguably the best example of what you do not want. Sloshy waves emanating from even the slightest movement by your partner can literally heave you off the bed. So as stability is an issue, you want to avoid any construction that connects one side of the bed to the other, like that unified aqueous blob of the previously mentioned water mattress. But also, things like connected coils and innersprings might be fun in their bounce, but such amusement isn’t always shared. A tatami mat-style hardness won’t rock the boat for anyone, but neither will it cushion or conform for comfort. The best fabrications are foam, which cradles and absorbs individual wiggles but doesn’t affect anyone in your proximity. Pocketed coils, vulcanized air chambers, and zoned layers offer the same advantage, so keep an eye out for these types of constructions when researching mattress options with your partner.

Suppose you and your bedmate are of similar body types or happen to prefer the same firmness and support beneath you. In that case, that eliminates one element of finding an acceptable mattress between the two of you. Otherwise, it’s a Goldilocks-type scenario. However, nowadays, neither of you needs to compromise. For the duos that have different firmness preferences, some ingenious solutions exist. Those foam mattresses, once again, solve a lot of issues, ideal for almost any individual body type. Offering even more personalization are the hybrid and split mattresses customizable to each sleeper. These are usually layers of latex foam that you can rearrange on the respective sides. This allows you to achieve the desired level of firmness or inflatable chambers embedded within the mattress, of which you can increase or decrease pressure to adjust. This allows one side of the bed to be solid and sturdy, while the other is cushiony-plush for those who need a little more padding.

The ultimate indulgence is a split-King adjustable. These mattresses are basically two separate twins, customized in almost every aspect to suit the sleeper on either side. With a split adjustable base, you can even have one angled up like an easy chair for reading or watching t.v., while the other is pancake-flat for prone-sleeping oblivion. As in all models, there are varying degrees of complexity. Some have temperature and firmness adjustability, even those with functionality modulation with just a click of the remote. As with all luxury products, these come at a premium, so while you can each choose your own perfect individual mattress consistencies, make sure you are of a single mind when you determine your budget. Disagreements about that can cause more lack of sleep than an uncomfortable mattress! But fortunately, today’s mattresses provide these customizable features at a range of price points, so even the most disparate couples can sleep together in peace.
